The seed of the idea that became the Otsego-Schoharie-Delaware Nurses Honor Guard began to grow July 1, 2023 after a member of the Capital Region NHG and a member of the Mohawk Valley NHG who worked together at Bassett Medical Center felt they should organize a chapter between those two areas that would cover the nurses of Otsego, Schoharie, and Delaware Counties. Within a matter of two or three days, the rest of our core leadership team recognized their shared vision and came together to begin the work of organizing.
Dressed in the traditional iconic white uniform, cap, and cape, the OSDNHG volunteers honor nurses in two different ways: "Honor the Living" services and "Nightingale Tribute and Final Call to Duty" at funerals or celebrations of life.
An "Honor the Living" service is exactly what it sounds like...our team comes to nurses who are in hospice or long-term care and we show our appreciation for their dedication to the profession of nursing while they are still here.
At the Nightingale Tribute and Final Call to Duty, the OSDNHG will send a cadre of nurses to attend a celebration of life, funeral, or graveside service of our nurse colleague to honor their careers and issue a final call to duty and then a release from that duty. Our hope is that these services will pay honor to that nurse and comfort those who supported the work of their loved one.
Our work is completely volunteer-based and has been supported by the generous donations of those who believe in the value of what we do.
